About TMBT Film Production competition

Here at TMBT Films our goal is simple: we want to greenlight micro-budget supershort films. Having operated for over four years as a film awards body (The Monkey Bread Tree Film Awards) we felt it was time to expand our group and look at how we can help writers and filmmakers work together to make micro-budget films.

To begin with, our competition will solely concentrate on micro-budget super shorts (films made for less than $1,500 and are a maximum of five minutes in length).

Our competition will run every two months, during which we will be completing a submissions cycle, which will see a select few of these submitting filmmakers and writers receive support in seeing a project produced. The number of films ‘greenlight’ by TMBT Films, and the amount of financial support offered during each cycle of submissions will be entirely determined by the number of entrants (ie more entrants = more projects greenlit). Updates regarding the expected production slate of each cycle, the budgets set to be provided and the sort of festival exposure offered by TMBT Films will be outlined per season on our website.

Our guarantees: we aim to finance each supershort (3-5 minutes in length) with a minimum investment of $100, but this could be more – it is all based on the number of entrants per season. Our team will be available for support in various ways during your greenlit production, including walking through your pre-production, production and post-production steps. This is essentially a low-level mentorship programme – one which will be catered to you and your project as best we can (often based on your experience level and needs). IMDb listings, website promotions, and screening opportunities will be provided to each of our ‘greenlit’ projects as well.

Who can submit? Writers, Directors and Producers of any international background (please note: all correspondence will be in English, and the final film will require English subtitling to be completed if the film is not in English).

The submission process is as follows:

Stage one – Processing: your submission as an applicant will be ranked and processed by our team. Each submitter will receive an email reviewing their submission and will be provided with an opportunity to submit any further information necessary to complete this stage of the process. If a submitter successfully completes this stage, they will be invited to complete the interview stage within three weeks of their initial submission (this stage can be skipped by entering the ‘interview’ category).

Stage two – Interview: submitters will be requested to complete a series of questions detailing how they intend on using the funding and production support offered, as well as how the experience will help their film output for this year (we are essentially goal-oriented at TMBT Films). Submitters will also have an opportunity at this stage to share a bit about themselves with us – we want to get to know you, and what makes you unique as a creative!

Stage three – Selection: our jury will complete their analysis of all applicants and choose at least one script to be produced, and at least one director and one producer who will be provided production support (again – with more submissions we will greenlight more projects each season). Please note: these three individuals will not necessarily work together, and the projects will be unique for each team and can take place anywhere in the world.

All selected and ‘greenlit’ submitters will have a maximum six months to complete their project(s) in order to receive production, festival and distribution support from TMBT Films (this support will last up to the region of three to six months after production has been completed as a minimum from our side of things – we want to support you and your project for as long as we can). All of the final films will remain the property of the film’s producers, however, they will be required to credit TMBT Films, the film’s writer(s) and be listed on IMDb (we will complete the listing for you).

Who is the competition for?

For Writers – Prior to submitting, we will expect you to have: access to scriptwriting software or be able to produce a script which meets production standards (we can’t after all, be expected to hand your script over for production if it is not ‘shootable’). Be fluent in English (all scripts submitted must be in English). Must have completed at least one written story prior to submitting as an applicant, an extract from which will be required during the interview process – extract of 5 pages minimum. Please note: this can be any form of creative writing, but not academic). Be willing to grant production permission to TMBT Films to select the production team of your script and relinquish all rights in a supershort script for this competition, if your project is ‘greenlit’. Please note: a brief for the script will be provided to you, which will include production restrictions – these will not be negotiable, and as a writer, you will simply have to work within these micro budget restrictions.

For Directors – Prior to submitting, we will expect you to have: access to filming equipment, be fluent in English (for communication and subtitling, if you intend on producing a film not in English). Willing to outline your production intentions and restrictions (we want to hear what sort of locations and cast/crew you can get your hands on – we want to understand what you are working with and see how we can help with this!), past experience (evidence of this will be required during the interview stage) and be willing to take on a script without altering it for the production process (ie – you will be provided a script which will be written by a different writer, and it will be your job to produce it with our support without excessively altering the material).

For Producers – Prior to submitting, we will expect you to have: Prior to submitting, we will expect you to have: access to filming equipment or know a team that has said access, be fluent in English (for communication and subtitling, if you intend on producing a film not in English). Able to find a director/filmmaker who will oversee the production with you.

Please submit all materials digitally through FilmFreeway exclusively. We do not accept hard copies due to our changing judging panel.
All selections are final and no correspondence can be entered into regarding what projects were not ‘greenlit’ by our competition. The judging panel is mostly independent of the selection committee, making their voting entirely independent of one another.

You may choose to prevent TMBT Films from offering your film to screenings, and this will be discussed once the film is completed.
All films made will remain the property of the filmmakers, however, a credit to TMBT Films, the writer(s) of the project and IMDb listings will be required for each project.
You may have multiple entries and submit to multiple categories, but each entry and submission must have its own submission fee.
